Installing windows on a sloped roof instantly transforms the interior space by making a small room feel larger. Roof windows also reduce the need for artificial lighting and can improve a room’s ventilation.

However, to enjoy these benefits, it’s essential to choose the right type of window for your pitched roof.

In this article, our sloped-roof specialists present the different types of roof windows available on the market.

3 Types of Windows Compatible with a Sloped Roof

It’s impossible to install “standard” windows on a roof. Because the surface of a pitched roof is constantly exposed to the elements, you must choose one of the following three types of roof windows to avoid issues such as water infiltration.

1. Fixed Roof Windows

Fixed roof windows are skylights that cannot be opened. They provide natural light and a view of the sky or surrounding landscape. However, since they do not open, they cannot help regulate humidity in a room.

Fixed roof windows are typically installed on high ceilings or areas that are difficult to reach.

2. Ventilated Roof Windows

Ventilated roof windows look very similar to fixed roof windows. The main difference is that they can be opened manually or electronically. They are therefore a good option for rooms where condensation may occur due to poor ventilation.

For example, they can help adjust humidity levels in a bathroom or kitchen. They can even serve as emergency exits if they are accessible enough and comply with applicable regulations.

Several types of ventilated roof windows can be installed on a sloped roof, offering multiple style and ergonomic options:

  • Top-hinged roof windows
  • Center-pivot roof windows
  • Roof balcony windows

The only drawback is that they are generally more expensive than fixed roof windows.

3. Light Tubes (Sun Tunnels)

Light tubes or sun tunnels are composed of a long reflective tube that captures daylight and directs it inside the home to provide natural lighting. Some models feature dimmers that allow you to control the amount of light entering the room.

Other versions include a built-in fan to regulate humidity or a filter that blocks UV rays.

Light tubes are a great choice for spaces where privacy is important. However, they do not provide a view of the outside. They are therefore best suited for small areas such as bathrooms, hallways, or closets.

They are relatively easy to install on a sloped roof because the tube can be routed between obstacles in the attic, such as roof framing elements or insulation materials.

Why Roof Window Installation and Maintenance Should Be Handled by Professionals

Poorly installed or improperly insulated roof windows can quickly become a nightmare, causing water infiltration and condensation issues.

This is why it is best to entrust their installation to professionals who can follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and take all necessary precautions.

Even when perfectly installed, roof windows must be inspected regularly and maintained periodically to prevent future problems.
